COVID-19, caused by the betacoronavirus SARSCoV-2, has emerged from a bat reservoir in temperate China, causing a global pandemic that has resulted in over 1.5 million deaths and 68 million cases of infection within 11 months, giving us a portent of the impact an emerging, airborne virus with a higher R number and case-fatality ratio might have on mankind in a future pandemic.
